At least thirteen passengers killed and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.

The official reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party called for an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
